Redaction - Type Specimen
I was asked to design a type specimen booklet and artifact for a font of my choice. The type specimen booklet would be a printed booklet with a saddle stitch binding. The artifact could be any medium we wanted other than traditional print media.
I was drawn to the font Redaction by Forest Young and Jeremy Mickel and saw this project as an opportunity to learn more about the cash bail system. Through my own research, I compiled a booklet that is A Brief Inquiry Into The Injustice System and displays the font Redaction as body text and display text in its multiple forms with self-generated photo copy texture throughout the pages. For the artifact, the words “Land of the Free” are projected onto the front of the Carbon County Courthouse in Pennsylvania, a public display of Redaction on 17th century architecture.
This project was highly praised by my classmates who chose to give me feedback. It was noted that I went above and beyond the project guidelines to turn this specimen into a research booklet and rent equipment and travel several hours to create the projection on the courthouse.
